Product Description

Tasmania is an archipelago of more than 300 islands sitting just 240 kilometres (150 miles) south-east of mainland Australia. While we are part of Australia, we are in many ways quite different. . There is one main island and many smaller ones. It has a population of a little less than half a million. Hobart, its capital, has one of the world’s most magnificent harbours and is situated in the southeast of the main Tasmanian island. Unlike other Australian states, Tasmania’s capital only has around 40% of the population, with half the state’s population living in the north and north west of the main island. This makes Tasmania the most decentralised state in the Commonwealth of Australia. Tasmania is promoted as the natural state, the “island of inspiration” and A World Apart, Not a World Away owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Almost 37% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites. The island is 364 kilometres long from its northernmost to its southernmost points, and 306 kilometres from west to east. Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city- the capital and most populous of the island state of Tasmania, with approximately 200,000 residents. With an estimated population of 500,000, Tasmania occupies an area of 68,401 square kilometres and is celebrated as ‘the natural state’- due to its pristine and largely untouched natural environment. Hobart serves as a busy seaport, a base for trade, as well as Australian and French operations in Antarctica. Tasmania, Australia’s island state, offers many opportunities for investors. Business confidence is high and there are plentiful, cost-competitive energy sources from natural gas and hydroelectricity. Shipbuilding, mining, energy, aquaculture, gourmet food and wine, information, tourism, and biotechnology are among the sectors which provide opportunities for investors. Tasmania’s Gross State Product (GSP) reached $20,907 million in 2007-08.
